Trenchless technology offers modern, minimally invasive solutions for many plumbing issues. But it can be a limited option in certain conditions and situations where traditional pipe excavation repair and replacement are necessary.
Severe Pipe Damage
Traditional pipe excavation is essential when pipes are severely damaged or collapsed. Pipes made from older materials like clay, cast iron, or Orangeburg deteriorate over time. The results are breaks and collapses that are too complicated for trenchless methods. In these cases, excavation allows for the complete removal of the damaged section and replacement with new, durable piping.
Extensive Root Intrusion
Tree roots infiltrate pipes to reach water sources, causing blockages, leaks, and breaks. While minor root intrusions are sometimes manageable with trenchless methods, extensive root damage requires excavation. This method of repair or replacement is a long-term solution and protection from future issues.
Unstable Soil Conditions
There are areas with frequent ground movement or heavy soil erosion. Certain soil conditions, such as shifting or unstable soil, can undermine the integrity of underground pipes. This is where traditional excavation is necessary to stabilize the ground around the pipes. It allows for proper bedding and support of the new pipes, reducing the risk of future damage.
Multiple Utility Lines
In densely populated areas with numerous underground utility lines, traditional excavation might be the safest and most effective method. Trenchless techniques can pose a risk of damaging other utility lines, such as gas, electric, or telecommunications. Excavation provides greater control and visibility. It makes sure the activity doesn't disturb adjacent utilities.
Non-Suitable Pipe Material
Some older pipes are not compatible with trenchless methods. If the existing pipes are of materials that are too brittle or have an irregular shape, it’s not feasible. Traditional excavation allows for the choice and installation of new, compatible piping materials that meet standards and regulations.
Large-Scale Repairs
For large-scale work, including commercial or industrial settings, traditional excavation is the practical approach. Large projects need extensive work that trenchless methods may not accommodate.
