The Latest in Environmentally Safe Drain Cleaning
Do you have a problem with a drain that is not draining properly in your home? You may think that it is a simple fix, but what you may not know is that some methods of clearing a drain can actually be harmful for the environment or even your family’s health. At ER Services of Charlotte NC, we strive to provide the most effective and safe methods for clearing a clog in your drain. We will talk about some of the more environmentally safe ways to clear a drain in your home.
Common Ways to Clean a Drain
Most people dealing with a clogged drain will jump directly to using a caustic harmful chemical to clear their drains. These products are easily accessible and well known, so many people will use these first instead of trying a more environmentally friendly method. These caustic chemicals are found in products such as Drano and Liquid-Plumr.
Not only are these chemicals harmful for the environment when they are flushed through to the sewer or septic tank, but they can even be dangerous for your health. These chemicals can cause damage to your eyes, skin and throat if it is breathed in during use.
Safer Ways to Clean a Drain
At ER Plumbing, we do not recommend cleaning a drain with the chemical methods used above. If you are attempting to clean a kitchen drain, it is a great idea to use a method that is most effective on grease build up.
One way to clean a drain of grease is to flush it with hot water. You can use hot water in combination with either rock salt or vinegar. This can also be done to prevent your kitchen and other drains from becoming clogged.
Another great drain cleaning method is to use an environmentally friendly drain product. Some of these products include ones like Earthworm Family Safe Drain Cleaner or BioOne. BioOne drain cleaner is not only free of harmful caustic chemicals, it also has the EPA’s Design for the Environment DfE approval.

Great article on the dangers of using caustic chemicals in drain pipes. In our area of Yakima WA there are still a lot of older (100+ years old) houses with cast iron pipes under the basement slab. Some of the pro strength Drano and such contains acids which reeks havoc on old iron pipes. I always tell clients that acid eats metal and jack hammering up a drain line under a slap can cost $thousands!
