Storm Water Drainage Tips for Charlotte Homeowners

Charlotte NC has been hit with a lot of rain lately, resulting in storm water drainage problems. Here at ER Plumbing, we are seeing a lot of water damage to homes and mosquito problems due to standing water. Some Charlotte properties that have never had problems with water damage in the past are now experiencing trouble. It's important to have proper storm water drainage in place before a storm hits, not after.

If you’re worried about your home, use the following drainage tips to protect your property from water damage.

Signs of Storm Water Drainage Problems

  • Cracks in your walls, particularly in plaster in older homes
  • Cracking, sagging or sinking patches in your concrete or driveway
  • Cracking tiles in floors
  • Warping of hardwood floors
  • Swelling of doors or window frames, preventing them from closing properly
  • Baseboard water damage
  • Mold growing in parts of the home
  • Flooring cracks (check underneath carpeting)
  • Exterior walls showing signs of distress
  • Sloping flooring

Storm Water Drainage Tips

You can prevent storm water drainage problems by taking the following precautions:

  • Check your property after each rainstorm, looking for places water is collecting near the foundation of your home.
  • Level ground or grade soil such that water drains away from your foundation.
  • Be sure not to overwater shrubs or flowers near your home’s foundation.
  • If you add a pool or perform large scale landscaping, make sure the grading of the land directs storm water away from your home. Make sure pool backwash is not deposited within 15 feet of the house.
  • Check your irrigation system for leaks.
  • Do not plant shrubs or plants that need a lot of water close to your home. Keep them at least two feet (preferably more) away from your home.
  • Install rain gutters. Keep them clear of debris. Direct rain downspouts away from your home. Watch the drainage path – if necessary, you can pipe water away from home.
  • Adjust pipes (or add piping) to direct air conditioner condensation away from your home.
  • Remove excess soil if it is higher than the stucco line; grade land away from your home.
  • Watch for sinkholes or depressions in your yard that allow water to collect and breed mosquitoes.

I had no idea that there were so many things that I could do to protect my storm drain. I've always thought that a lot of maintenance would fall to my city, but it's good to know that there's things I can do as well. Having a backed up storm drain is something that I'd rather not have to deal with, so you can bet I'm going to try all of these. Thanks for sharing!

Great tips for storm water drainage. Checking the property after every rainstorm is a must. Mosquitoes love water, and any stagnant water will be a perfect breeding ground for these pests. Plants are also good, especially if they repel mosquitoes, but water loving plants must be spaced away in order to keep mosquitoes from getting near your property. Thanks for sharing these tips, really informative.
