How Safe is Charlotte Drinking Water?

Charlotte water filtration system

According to HomeFacts.com, the drinking water supplied by Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities rated our drinking water 4.4 on a 10-point scale. A rating of 0 indicates minimally drinkable, while a rating of 10 indicates superior or outstanding drinkability. Unfortunately, that means our drinking water is not so great, especially when compared to drinking water available nationally.

Who is HomeFacts.com, and Why Should We Take Their Ratings Seriously?

Home Facts is a website dedicated to evaluating neighborhoods by safety, environmental quality, educational opportunities, etc. The site provides ratings for several health and safety factors and covers the entire nation. These ratings are not skewed by any association to a product or service being sold, but are provided as a public service. Feel free to explore their site and see how Charlotte’s drinking water compares to other drinking water sources around the nation.

Why is Charlotte’s Water Quality Getting Such a Poor Rating?

Does this mean Charlotte’s drinking water is unsafe? That answer depends on whom you talk to. The rating is based on the findings of 26 chemicals (in amounts that are above health standard levels) that are considered health hazards. The chemicals found at these levels are linked to the following health complications:

  • Cancer
  • Reproductive toxicity
  • Endocrine disruption
  • Neurotoxicity
  • Skin irritation
  • Organ system toxicity
  • Ecotoxicology

Of the 26 chemicals found in our drinking water, 18 of them were considered carcinogenic at the levels found in our water.  To research this further, look up the impact of the following chemicals on your body:

  • Total Trihalomethanes (TTHMs)
  • Chloroform
  • Bromodichloromethane
  • Dibromochloromethane
  • Dichloroacetic acid

These are just a few of the 26 chemicals found in our drinking water at unhealthy levels.

What Can You Do to Protect Yourself?

Interestingly enough, water safety has been in the news quite a bit in the last few years. In fact, President Obama’s Anti-Cancer Panel recommends filtering water as a way to lower your risk of contracting cancer. People all over the nation are realizing that they can’t rely on the water coming from their tap, but that it’s best to filter water before drinking it.

How to Choose a Water Filter

Using a water filter can make a huge difference in your drinking water quality. But are all water filters equal? The obvious answer is no. But how do you choose?

First off, you need to decide if you’re okay with purifying just your drinking water or if you want to purify the water you use to cook, bathe in, and wash your clothes in. When making this decision, you’ll want to consider the following:

  • Monetary investment in a water filtration system
  • Health effects of drinking, cooking in, and bathing in water

Homefacts.com has REMOVED the 'water quality' section of their site. I'm sure upon urgings from Uncle Sam--heaven forbid anyone know the truth. Thanks for posting this, but it took some digging to find it...
