Why Buy a Water Filtration System?
Wondering why you need a water filtration system? It’s true that the EPA monitors public drinking water quality. However, many health professionals are concerned by the chemicals used to sanitize water and advise we go even further in the purification process by using water filtration systems to take these same chemicals back out of the water before using it.
In a report titled “Reducing Environmental Cancer Risks: What We Can Do Now”, President Obama’s Anti-Cancer Panel recommends filtering water as a way to lower your risk of contracting cancer. The exact quote is: “Individuals and families have many opportunities to reduce or eliminate chemical exposures. For example, filtering home tap water or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.” (For more information on this report, released in May of 2010, go to the Water Quality Association website.)
To give you just one more example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health reported on a study conducted in 1998 by the Cancer Bureau, Laboratory Centre for Disease Control, Health Canada, which linked drinking chlorinated water byproducts with bladder and colon cancers, plus fetal abnormalities. The debate on water purification and safety rages on, leaving us to question if we really want to drink water that still has these chemicals and by-products in it.
What’s the best way to remove contaminants, sediment, and unwanted chemicals? A whole-house water carbon filtration system. Granular activated carbon filters can remove up to 99% of chlorine, chlorine byproducts, and other chemicals.
Water Quality Concerns
If you are concerned about the quality of your water, get your water evaluated for the following:
- Contaminants
- Chlorine, chloramines, and bromine – disinfectants used to sanitize water
- Sediment, which can gunk up pipes and appliances
- Water hardness, which can damage your appliances and fixtures
- Iron, which can stain sinks, toilets, and plumbing fixtures
- Foul odors, which can make water usage and drinking unpleasant
- Unpleasant taste, which can taint food and discourage proper hydration
Benefits of a Whole House Water Filtration System
If you install a water filtration system, you can expect:
- Improved water taste (you’ll drink more water if it tastes better)
- Elimination of foul odors (it’s tough to drink water if the smell is offensive)
- Safer water – 99% chlorine and chlorine byproduct-free water
- Better tasting food (Did you know chefs cook with filtered water?)
- Fewer water stains—on appliances and clothing
- Healthier skin, including fewer wrinkles (chlorine speeds up wrinkling)
- Healthier hair (chlorine bleaches out color and dries out your hair)
- Extended life of your appliances, fixtures, faucets and pipes
- No need to ever buy bottled water again
- Less waste (since you won’t be using plastic bottles, which need to be recycled and may be leaking chemicals into your drinking water)
- Peace of mind – you’ll know you are drinking, cooking with, and bathing in pure, clean water
If you install a water filtration system and a water softener, you can expect:
- Softer skin
- Brighter and softer clothes
- No more water spots in your shower stall
- Shinier and more manageable hair
- Less use of soaps and detergents, as soft water produces more suds
- Increased water heater efficiency, which will save you money (no more mineral build up in the tank and pipes)
- Spot-free dishes
- Prolonged life of your water heater (soft water reduces scale buildup)
- Prolonged life of your dishwasher
- Prolonged life of your faucets and all pipes
How You’ll Save Money by Installing a Filtration System
You may think a water filtration system is expensive, but this investment will pay for itself in no time. How? Let’s crunch some numbers to find out.
Are you currently buying bottled water? If you buy a $2 bottle of water even five days a week, you’re putting out $10 a week, or $520 a year on bottled water. Now consider the fact that a quarter of all bottled water out there is nothing better than filtered tap water. That’s right – you’re paying $2 a bottle for the same stuff you can get from the tap.
If you buy a top-notch whole house water filtration system, you can have as much pure, clean (higher quality and better tasting) water as you want. Some of our water filtration systems don’t even require you to change the filter media for up to ten years! That means you’ll enjoy pure, clean water for ten years for the one-time cost of installing the water filtration system of your choice.
How much will this save you? Buying one bottle of water per workday for ten years will cost you $5,200. If you install an average whole house filtration system (the average cost is $2,400 for a top-notch system), you’ll pay off the filtration system in four and a half years.
Those numbers only reflect the savings incurred by one person. If you’ve been buying bottled water for several family members, you may be able to pay off that filtration system in as little as two years. You’ll simultaneously buy yourself peace of mind because you’ll know your family is drinking, cooking, and bathing in clean, safe water.
