The Sandbox
In 2010, Brian Dulin, Mara Campolungo and a group of friends saw a need – helping families during Christmas at Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, NC. After the holidays, this group of “go-getters” wanted to continue to provide support for families. In March of 2011, a social worker at the hospital asked if they could host a prom for patients who would miss their own prom due to treatment or the eventual impact of their illness. The answer, of course, was “Yes!” And, The Sandbox’s signature event, An Evening of Believing Prom was born.
At An Evening of Believing Prom, kids can forget about their troubles for a night. They are pampered, receiving hair and make up services as well as access to fun formal wear such a prom dresses and suits. The red carpet is rolled out for them; limos drive them to the venue. The dance floor is rocking with fun music and dazzling lights; volunteers offer a wide variety of food, beverages and activities for the kids to enjoy. The mood is festive; the kids are excited; parents get a break from hospital rooms and doctor appointments. Everyone gets to have fun for a night. Everyone gets a chance to spend time believing and relaxing in the company of people who understand the challenges endured.
A Support Network
Today, from such humble beginnings, The Sandbox now serves families through our CARRE program. The Sandbox’s CARRE program (Caring About Real Relationships Empathetically) is the umbrella to all of the support they offer families in The Sandbox. The Sandbox has humbly served more than 5,000 families in the greater Charlotte region as well as some parts of South Carolina through a variety of programs and events.
When a child is diagnosed with cancer, life-altering, rare or terminal illness, it is our mission is to lock arms with people in our community to meet the practical, social and emotional needs of families at the time of diagnosis or referral. The Sandbox creates opportunities for families that encourage friendships, create lasting memories, produce joyful experiences and most importantly, restore hope.
