Don't try and sharpen the blades on your own. After a while the blade will become dull. A way to help alleviate this is to throw some ice cubes down the garbage disposal. Because they are strong but have give you can get a nice sharp edge on the blade.

Don't run the disposal without first running water down the drain. Make sure you keep the water on while you are using it and until you are sure the garbage disposal is done with its job.
