Charlotte Green Plumbing: Is It Cost Effective or Not?

Green Plumbing in Charlotte NC

Would you like to go green, but you aren’t sure where to start? Your plumbing system is one of the best places to invest first. By switching to green plumbing, you will reduce energy costs, improve overall health and be kinder to the environment.

What Does It Cost to Go Green?

In most cases, you aren’t going to spend more if you make green choices for your plumbing appliances. Green washing machines will earn back the investment in a couple years (energy and water savings). Green toilets (low flush toilets) easily and quickly earn back the tiny investment to switch out existing toilets with new greener toilets. Even water heaters, if you go green, will earn back the money you invest. Heating water is one of the largest energy costs for any home (usually about 30 percent of your energy costs), so a new tankless water heater will earn back the extra expense in a matter of years.

Money and Time

When considering how cost effective the move to green plumbing will be for your family, you have to measure the investment in relation to time. If you only plan to live in your home for a couple more years, a tank water heater will be the more cost effective way to go. However, if you plan on living in your home for ten years, a tankless water heater is the most cost effective (and green) choice.

Why? Because the energy and water savings will compensate for the initial investment in a matter of a few years, and the long term benefits of a tankless water heater (which should function with high efficiency for 20 years) vastly outweigh the benefits of a traditional tank water heater, which will lose efficiency after seven years or so, and will need to be replaced at around 10-12 years.

If you already know you need to replace a leaky toilet, going green should be a no-brainer. A green (low flush) toilet costs the same (or approximately the same) as a traditional toilet, and yet it will save you on water costs. Going green, in this case, is an easy choice.
