Gas Logs FAQ - Part I

Can I Install Gas Logs In My Fireplace?

Do you have a fireplace in your home but aren’t sure if you can install gas logs in it? The following guide will help you determine if you can safely install gas logs in your fireplace.

Vented Gas Logs Can Be Installed In The Following Types Of Fireplaces:

  • Any fireplace that can burn wood (damper must be open or venting piped through chimney/vent)
  • Outdoor fireplaces
  • Outdoor fire pits

Unvented Gas Logs Can Be Installed In The Following Types of Fireplaces:

  • Any fireplace that can burn wood
  • Approved ventless fireboxes

How Can I Tell If My Fireplace Is Adequate For Installation of Gas Logs?

The following guidelines will help you determine if you can install gas logs in your existing fireplace.

If You Have A Masonry Fireplace:

  • Great for vented and unvented gas logs
  • Your fireplace will have a firebox and a chimney inside the masonry, so both vented and unvented logs can operate safely
  • Make sure your chimney is in working order; if the chimney is deemed unsafe for burning wood, you’ll have to make repairs before you burn vented gas logs in it
  • Check to see if your damper opens and closes; have a professional check out your fireplace before installation just to be sure you get the right type of gas logs

If You Have a Prefabricated Woodburning Fireplace:

  • Great for vented gas logs
  • Possibly great for unvented gas logs
  • Your woodburning fireplace will look like a metal box with a refractory panel lining
  • Your woodburning fireplace will have a vent and damper, which means you can definitely install vented gas logs if you vent through the same chimney
  • Check your owner’s manual to see if your woodburning fireplace limits the BTUs or size of ventless gas logs

If You Have A Ventless Firebox or Fireplace:

  • Not acceptable for vented gas logs
  • Possibly great for unvented gas logs
  • Your ventless firebox or fireplace will look like a metal box (framed)
  • You will need to check the manufacturer’s instructions to see what BTUs and size of ventless gas logs are acceptable

If You Have a B-Vent, Direct Vent, or Gas Stove

  • Not acceptable for vented gas logs
  • Not acceptable for unvented gas logs
